Brushing Without Battles: Habits That Stick

Brushing battles are a rite of passage — but they don't have to be a nightly standoff. The trick is turning two minutes of brushing into something your child owns rather than endures.

Start with choice: let them pick their brush and a fluoride toothpaste flavor. Brush together so they mirror you, and use a two-minute song or sand timer so the ending never feels arbitrary. For wiggly toddlers, the knee-to-knee position (their head in your lap, facing you) gives you a clear view and keeps them feeling secure.

Use a smear of toothpaste the size of a grain of rice under age three, and a pea-sized amount after that. Spit, don't rinse — the leftover fluoride keeps protecting. And when thumb-sucking or pacifier habits linger past age three, talk to us before it becomes a power struggle; gentle guidance now can save orthodontic work later.
