Dental Emergencies: A Calm Parent's Handbook

Dr. Nora Whitfield · June 15, 2026

Dentist calmly examining a young patient's teeth

Knocked tooth? Toothache at midnight? Deep breath — most dental emergencies look scarier than they are, and knowing the first three steps makes all the difference.

For a knocked-out permanent tooth, hold it by the crown (never the root), rinse it briefly without scrubbing, and try to place it back in the socket. If that isn't possible, keep it in cold milk and call us immediately — teeth re-implanted within an hour have the best chance of survival. For baby teeth, don't re-implant; just control bleeding with gentle pressure and call us.

For toothaches, rinse with warm water, floss gently to dislodge trapped food, and use a cold compress for swelling. Avoid aspirin on the gums. Then call our emergency line — we reserve same-day slots every morning precisely for these moments, so your child is never left waiting in pain.
